Tele-Quebec to receive $3M to promote the French language

MONTREAL — The Quebec government announced today it is providing $3 million in financial assistance to the province’s educational television broadcaster, la Société de télédiffusion du Québec (Télé-Québec), to support Le français, comme je l’aime (French, how I like it), a project that promotes the French language.

Specifically, Télé-Québec will produce three original productions designed to emphasize the importance of the French language and encourage its use, particularly among young viewers and Internet users. The three productions are:

  • a series of “101 capsules” with a humorous, historical and artistic flavour, promoting words and expressions used in Quebec;
  • a 90-minute television event that pays homage to words, where testimonials, songs and humour are intermingled and which brings together multidisciplinary artists; and
  • La fin des faibles (The End of the Weak), a second enriched edition of Télé-Québec’s presentation of the artistic linguistic performance competition focusing on rap and emphasizing lyrics.

In addition, La fin des faibles will now include an educational component, where Télé-Québec will use its Télé-Québec in Class platform to facilitate the use of content by teachers, in addition to producing an educational kit encouraging young people to express themselves and create in French, says a press release.

These initiatives will be supported through extensive communications focused on the French language, including messages broadcast on air, the Web and social media, says the release.

The funding for this project is part of the Quebec government’s investment of $50 million over five years to protect, promote and enhance the French language as announced in the government’s March 2020 Budget Plan.

“Faithful to its educational and cultural mandate and recognizing the importance of a living, strong and colourful language for the development of a healthy and dynamic society, Télé-Québec is proud to propose a new mobilizing movement to promote and enhance the beauty and the richness of the language among different audiences throughout Quebec,” said Marie Collin, president and CEO of Télé-Québec, in an English translation of the press release.

“With the project Le français, comme je l’aime, Télé-Québec will provide a platform of choice for our language in 2021-2022.”
