Taylor Swift fans set another record for mobile data use on Rogers 5G network

Fans attending Taylor Swift’s final concert of her Eras Tour at BC Place in Vancouver on Sunday set a new record for the most data used at a single event on the Rogers 5G network, using more than 11 terabytes (TB) of mobile data to share and stream the concert experience, according to a Roger press release.

This shatters the previous record set Nov. 21 at the Taylor Swift concert at Rogers Centre in Toronto, when fans used 7.4 TB of data on the Rogers 5G network in just a few hours.

“Taylor fans use incredible amounts of data at her concerts to share the experience, and their data usage at the Vancouver shows have set a new bar for Rogers 5G network at a stadium event. Our 5G network at BC Place is brand new and we’re thrilled fans set a new record sharing this once-in-lifetime experience,” Mark Kennedy, Rogers’s chief technology officer, said in a statement.

The data used Dec. 8 is the equivalent of uploading 307,000 photos and 2,180 hours of video streaming, according to Rogers. The most-shared moments of the Sunday show were when Swift came on stage and the start of the “Reputation” era, based on data usage spikes, Rogers said.

As presenting sponsor of Swift’s The Eras Tour, Rogers invested $10 million to enhance 5G connectivity at BC Place ahead of the last stop on Swift’s global tour. This included a full network redesign and installation of a new in-stadium network system “to bring fans the best experience across her three nights in Vancouver,” Rogers said in its press release, adding its teams spent 10,000 hours of planning and installation took 10,000 hours with a crew of more than 40.

“The upgrades increase 5G network capacity by 38 times throughout the stadium — the equivalent to coverage provided by 20 towers in Vancouver. Over the course of Taylor’s three performances in Vancouver, fans on the Rogers 5G network at BC Place used 32TB of data,” the press release reads.

As part of planning for the expected crowds of fans outside BC Place, Rogers installed two temporary cells on wheels to increase wireless capacity and ensure reliable connectivity, it said.

Rogers earlier this year also undertook an $8-million upgrade of its 5G network at Rogers Centre in Toronto ahead of Swift’s six-night tour stop there in November.
