Tablet families cut TV viewing by 3 hours a week – MTM

OTTAWA – Given the explosion of portable media technologies such as tablets, it’s critical that the broadcasting industry begins examining its impact on all generations says Media Technology Monitor (MTM). It has issued a new series of reports that profiles Generation Y, Boomers and Canadian families and their ownership and use of media technology. Highlights of the reports include:

Families and Media Consumption:

  • Canadian Families tend to be heavy users of the internet, often multitasking while watching TV and interacting with social media content simultaneously.
  • Families are spending less time on traditional television than the rest of Canadians, 3 hours less per week.
  • Families are also heavy adopters of all TV add-ons, especially game consoles among families with teens living in the home.

Profile of Gen Yers’ Media Technology Adoption and Use:

  • Generation Y is embracing online activities, spending 24 hours per week online.
  • Most are owners of portable media devices such as MP3 players and smartphones.
  • Generation Y are avid multi-taskers, 78% go online and watch TV at the same time.

Profile of Boomers’ Media Technology Adoption and Use:

  • Not surprisingly, Boomers are among the highest income earners with just under half reporting that they earn $75,000 annually.
  • Traditional TV and Radio still rule across Young and Older Boomers, they’re spending more hours a week watching TV and listening to Radio than Anglophones and Francophones in general.
  • Younger Boomers are more likely to have all the auxiliary components to enhance their TV experience such as PVRs, Blu-Ray players and HDTVs.
