BRANT COUNTY and CALEDON, Ont. — Southwestern Integrated Fibre Technology (SWIFT) today announced it has awarded a contract to Xplornet Communications to improve access to high-speed broadband for 2,465 households and businesses throughout Brant County and within the Six Nations of the Grand River First Nation community.
The provincial and federal governments are providing combined funding of $3.2 million to Xplornet to deploy fibre cabling along 120 kilometres of underserved roadway to provide reliable high-speed broadband access to Brant County residents and businesses. In total, the region will receive $9.4 million in broadband upgrades, including more than $6.2 million in contributions from Xplornet.
The communities who will receive broadband improvements through this project include Harrisburg, Harley, Fairfield Plain, Burtch, Newport, and Middleport, in addition to the Six Nations of the Grand River community.
This newly announced project is scheduled to be complete with service fully available in August 2022, according to information on SWIFT’s list of approved projects, available here.

Yesterday, SWIFT announced Vianet has broken ground on two fibre-optic network projects in Caledon, which were awarded to the service provider in September 2020.
Construction for a $1.9-million broadband infrastructure project which will bring high-speed Internet access to 375 households in Mount Wolfe (located in the northeast end of Caledon) has begun. The project is expected to be completed by December 2021.
In addition, work is now underway in central Caledon on a $2.5-million fibre-to-the-home network which will provide improved high-speed Internet access for 471 households in the Albion and Centreville Creek communities. This project is expected to be completed in March 2022. The company has been much work lately connecting rural Ontarians.
“Vianet is pleased to say that we have gotten a great start on our Caledon SWIFT projects and have been able to keep up the hard work throughout the winter. The progress we are making over the winter months will keep this project moving forward and on target to get customers online as soon as possible,” said Brian McCullagh, Vianet’s director of business development, in SWIFT’s press release.
