SWIFT awards new money for Perth County fibre builds


PERTH COUNTY, Ont. — Southwestern Integrated Fibre Technology (SWIFT) today announced details of five fibre-to-the-home projects which will deliver $6.6-million worth of broadband upgrades to expand high-speed Internet access to 869 households and businesses in Perth County, Ont.

SWIFT has awarded $3.7 million in federal and provincial funding to improve high-speed broadband connectivity throughout the municipalities of North Perth, West Perth and within the township of Perth East (northwest of Kitchener-Waterloo). The Internet service providers who are building the FTTH networks are contributing more than $2.9 million collectively to the broadband projects.

Three of the FTTH projects are being undertaken by Mornington Communications, which has been awarded funding to service a total of 162 kilometres of underserved roadway to bring high-speed Internet access to 665 homes and businesses within the municipality of North Perth and throughout the township of Perth East. These projects represent a collective total investment of $5.3 million and are expected to be completed with service available by late 2022.

Tuckersmith Communications is receiving funding to deploy fibre-optic cabling along more than 31 kms of underserved roads within the municipality of West Perth. This $980,000 FTTH network will deliver high-speed connectivity to 113 homes and businesses by early 2022, says SWIFT’s press release.

Wightman Telecom was awarded a contract to deploy fibre cabling along 1 km of underserviced roadway within the municipality of North Perth to bring high-speed connectivity to 91 households and businesses. Construction of the $274,000 FTTH network is expected to be completed with service available by early 2022.

“With the infrastructure investments announced today, approximately 2,170 more residents in Southwestern Ontario will soon benefit from greater access to high-speed internet,” said Barry Field, executive director of SWIFT.
