As Canadian hockey fans pin their hopes on the Edmonton Oilers as the country’s sole remaining NHL team contending for the Stanley Cup this year, Super Channel announced Wednesday production has started on an in-depth, five-part documentary series, The Great Ones, that delves into the story of one of the most celebrated dynasties in sports history.
“The Great Ones will explore the remarkable journey of the Edmonton Oilers during their dominant era in the 1980s, featuring an iconic cast of NHL Legends, including the Hall of Fame players who defined the Oilers dynasty,” reads a Super Channel press release. “This series will provide an unprecedented look at the lives and careers of these legendary athletes, both on and off the ice, capturing their triumphs, challenges, and the indelible mark they left on the sport of hockey.
“With unparalleled archival access, The Great Ones will feature all-new interviews with the luminaries of the Oilers dynasty. From the superstars to rivals, broadcasters, managers, and other characters behind the scenes, the full untold story of what really happened will be reconstructed for the very first time.”
This docuseries is being produced by Ryan Reynolds’s Maximum Effort in collaboration with Score G Productions, Fennessey Films, OEG Sports & Entertainment, and Super Channel. Directed by Emmy Award winner Austin Andrews, The Great Ones is set to premiere on Super Channel in Winter 2027.
