OTTAWA – While awareness of Ultra HD (4K) is growing among Canadians, only 4% of Canadians report owning a 4K TV set, according to new research from the Media Technology Monitor (MTM).

Key topics this year, according to its free Top 5 Sneak Peek Report, include streaming music services, Ultra HD, online banking, ad blockers, and skinny basic TV packages.

MTM also released its Media Technology Adoption Spring 2016: Analysis of the English-language Market which is a summary of penetration trends for many of the technologies it measures.  The report covers audio and video technologies delivered over traditional, Internet and mobile platforms, and the technologies are presented in relation to the different stages of technology adoption, starting with the ‘innovation’ stage and ending with the ‘decline’ stage.

Highlights from that report include:

– The majority of Anglophones still subscribe to television services, even though the TV subscription market has experienced declines due to pressure from new competitors and online TV services;

– The number of Anglophones who connect their TV to the Internet continues to grow, with nearly half (48%) now doing so;

– Going hand in hand with the growth of Internet-connected TVs is the continued growth of Netflix.  Close to half (48%) of Anglophones now have a Netflix subscription;

– Over one quarter (27%) of Anglophones report using a music streaming service, up from 21% in the Fall.

MTM is a research product of CBC/Radio Canada.
