TORONTO – Some of Canada’s biggest stars will meet with Members of the Ontario Legislature on Monday, asking for legislation to provide artists with the same rights as other workers in Ontario.
ACTRA Toronto president Heather Allin will be flanked by Canadian actors Wendy Crewson, Art Hindle, Peter Keleghan, Mayko Nguyen, Gordon Pinsent at the media studio at the Queen’s Park main legislative building in Toronto on Monday. A news conference has been scheduled for 10:00 ET.
ACTRA Toronto and other arts organizations have been asking for legislative changes designed to help artists such as the implementation of a “fair and equitable” collective bargaining process, changes to the Employment Standards Act, and stronger legislation for the wellbeing of child performers.
Many of these changes were recommended in the 2006 Status of the Artist report commissioned by the Minister of Culture but have yet to be implemented, the press release said.
ACTRA Toronto is the largest organization within ACTRA, representing over 15,000 of Canada’s professional performers working in the English-language recorded media in Canada.
