Starlink download speeds increased almost 58% in Canada over past year, says Ookla report


SEATTLE — The median download speed for SpaceX’s Starlink satellite Internet service increased by nearly 58% in Canada over the past year, according to a new report from Seattle-based broadband and mobile network testing company Ookla.

Ookla’s analysis is based on Speedtest Intelligence data gathered in Q1 2022 compared to data from Q1 2021. (Please see the chart above.)

According to the data, Starlink’s median download speed in Canada increased to 97.40 Mbps in Q1 2022 from 61.84 Mbps in Q1 2021.

However, the median upload speed for Starlink in Canada decreased at least 36% over the same time period, to 10.70 Mbps in Q1 2022 from 16.69 Mbps in Q1 2021, according to Ookla’s report.

In addition, median latency on Starlink’s service in Canada increased to 55 milliseconds from 51 ms, the report says.
