Wireless service launches in 19th wireless market in Nunavut

OTTAWA – SSi Micro has won Startup Canada’s National High-Growth Entrepreneurship Award in recognition of the launch of its new SSi Mobile cell phone service in Nunavut.

The Startup Canada Awards celebrate and distinguish outstanding achievement in advancing Canadian entrepreneurship.

In May, SSi Micro won the Startup Canada regional award for the North in the same “high-growth” category, and as such competed against other regional winners across the country.  The award was one of sixteen categories honoured at the grand finale awards gala at the Shaw Centre in Ottawa on October 18.

“For 28 years, the SSi family has been committed to the vision that all northerners deserve access to leading-edge affordable telecommunications services, no matter how remote their community,” said SSi Micro founder and CEO Jeff Philipp, in the news release.  “Meeting the challenges of this commitment in the Arctic is no easy feat and can only be accomplished through innovation and perseverance. The launch of SSi Mobile in Nunavut represents an incredible effort by a great team, and to have their dedication and skill recognized by Startup Canada with this national award is truly an honour.”

In other company news, SSi Micro has launched in its 19th wireless market in Nunavut.

The company’s QINIQ voice and data service is now available in Chesterfield Inlet, Clyde River, Hall Beach, Qikiqtarjuaq, Grise Fiord, Cape Dorset, Coral Harbour, Arctic Bay, Taloyoak, Sanikiluaq, Resolute Bay, Naujaat, Pangnirtung, Whale Cove, Kimmirut, Iqaluit, Rankin Inlet, Igloolik, and Kugaaruk.

All 25 communities in Nunavut are scheduled to receive SSi Mobile by the end of this year as it continues to roll out the service community by community.
