SSi Mobile arrives in Iqaluit; will launch in other 9 communities by year-end

IQALUIT – SSi Micro is set to launch its wireless service in in Iqaluit on Saturday, marking its 16th wireless market in Nunavut.

SSi Mobile is delivered over QINIQ’s Nunavut-wide 4G-LTE and 2G-GSM network, making it the only mobile service with coverage in all 25 communities, reads the company’s news release.

SSi is using capacity on Telesat’s new Ka-band T19 satellite to support the new service in Iqaluit, and added that it was the first provider to commit to T19 in Northern Canada while planning the development and launch of SSi Mobile.

“We are excited to add SSi Mobile to QINIQ’s line of affordable wireless services for all of Nunavut.  Plans start as low as $25 per month and there are no contracts, making it easier for everyone to have a mobile phone,” said SSi founder and CEO Jeff Philipp, in the release.  “A game-changer for many families is the elimination of long-distance fees between Nunavut communities – all calls from an SSi Mobile phone are local. There is also unlimited texting to everywhere in Canada, and customers will soon be able to use their in long distance calling minutes and regular data when traveling across Canada. No separate roaming charges will apply!”

Delivered by the QINIQ community service representatives, SSi Mobile has retail service currently available in Arctic Bay, Cape Dorset, Clyde River, Coral Harbour, Chesterfield Inlet, Grise Fiord, Hall Beach, Kimmirut, Naujaat, Pangnirtung, Resolute Bay, Sanikiluaq, Taloyoak, Qikiqtarjuaq and Whale Cove.

Voice and data roaming services are available for SSi Mobile customers throughout Nunavut, and retail SSi Mobile service will be available to customers in the remaining 9 communities by the end of the year.
