Rogers was the fastest fixed broadband provider in Canada in Q3, says Ookla
SEATTLE — In its latest Speedtest Global Index measurement of network speeds in Canada, Seattle-based Ookla reports Rogers Communications was the fastest fixed broadband provider among top providers in Canada in the third quarter of 2020.
According to Ookla’s Speedtest Intelligence data from July to September, Rogers achieved a speed score of 151.51 in Q3 2020. (Ookla’s speed score incorporates measurements of each provider’s download and upload speeds to rank network speed performance, with 90% of the final speed score being attributed to download speed.)
The next highest speed score among fixed broadband providers was achieved by Shaw Communications (126.48), followed by Telus (91.69), Videotron (90.70), Bell (87.37), Cogeco (82.33) and TekSavvy (36.10).
Rogers also achieved the highest consistency score among fixed broadband providers in Canada during Q3 2020, with 88% of its results showing at least a 25 Mbps minimum download speed and 3 Mbps minimum upload speed, according to Ookla’s Speedtest Global Index data for Canada during the third quarter, ended September 30.
The second highest consistency score was achieved by Shaw (84.4%), followed by Videotron (81.5%), Cogeco (79.9%), Telus (78.1%), Bell (72.3%) and TekSavvy (60.3%).
Rogers touted the results in a press release this afternoon, pointing out it also achieved the top national wireless network consistency score. (For data regarding mobile network speeds, please see below.)
When it comes to calculating mean latency for top fixed broadband providers in Canada during Q3 2020, Telus had the lowest (best) mean latency at 14 milliseconds (ms). Rogers achieved the second lowest mean latency at 15 ms, followed by Shaw (16 ms), Bell (16 ms), Videotron (17 ms), Cogeco (20 ms) and TekSavvy (24 ms).
Looking at fixed broadband network speeds by region (pictured above), Newfoundland and Labrador showed the fastest mean download speed over fixed broadband in Canada during Q3 2020 at 205.21 Mbps, according to Ookla’s data. The fastest provider in Newfoundland and Labrador was Rogers. The next highest mean download speed over fixed broadband was reported in New Brunswick (194.01 Mbps), where Rogers was again the fastest provider in Q3 2020.
Yukon Territory had the slowest mean download speed over fixed broadband during the same period at 49.17 Mbps.
In a breakdown of fixed broadband download speeds by city, London, Ont., showed the fastest mean download speed during Q3 2020 at 185.13 Mbps, followed by Edmonton (165.66 Mbps), Calgary (164.81 Mbps), Ottawa (164.33 Mbps), Toronto (162.61 Mbps), Halifax (153.18 Mbps), Vancouver (151.21 Mbps), Quebec City (148.90 Mbps), Winnipeg (141.54 Mbps) and Montreal (102 Mbps).
Mobile network speeds
Ookla also released data measuring mobile network speeds for the top providers in Canada for Q3 2020. According to Ookla’s Speedtest Intelligence data, Telus was the fastest mobile operator in Canada in the third quarter, achieving a speed score of 66.79.
The next highest mobile speed score was achieved by Bell (64.37), followed by Fido (60.17), Rogers (51.46), Videotron (44.67) and Freedom Mobile (29.86).
As mentioned above, in Q3 2020, Rogers achieved the highest consistency score (79.3%) among national wireless network operators, compared to Telus (76.8%) and Bell (76.5%). However, the regional providers achieved higher consistency scores than the national operators, with Videotron scoring highest (88.4%), followed by Fido (87%) and Freedom Mobile (79.8%). (Ookla’s Speedtest consistency score for mobile providers uses thresholds of 5 Mbps minimum download speed and 1 Mbps minimum upload speed.)
In terms of latency for the top mobile providers during Q3 2020, Videotron and Fido tied for the lowest latency at 33 ms, followed by Freedom Mobile (34 ms), Bell (38 ms), Telus (39 ms) and Rogers (40 ms).
Analyzing the mobile speed data by region, Alberta had the fastest mean mobile download speed in Canada in Q3 2020 at 79.15 Mbps, followed by British Columbia (73.12 Mbps). Bell was the fastest provider in both of those western provinces in Q3 2020.
Looking at the mobile data by city, Quebec City showed the fastest mean mobile download speed among Canada’s most populous cities during Q3 2020 at 95.89 Mbps, followed by Edmonton (95.74 Mbps), Winnipeg (94.62 Mbps), Calgary (92.66 Mbps), Vancouver (88.87 Mbps), London (88.75 Mbps), Halifax (87.84 Mbps), Montreal (86.24 Mbps), Toronto (85.14 Mbps) and Ottawa (71.06 Mbps).
