Smithsonian Channel launches two-month nationwide free preview


Blue Ant Media announced Monday its specialty TV channel Smithsonian Channel is kicking off a nationwide free preview, running through March 30, which will include the premiere of the three-part documentary series Surviving WWII.

Debuting Feb. 14 at 9 p.m. ET/PT, Surviving WWII marks the 80th anniversary of the end of the Second World War and highlights the personal stories of bravery and resilience of those who lived through the conflict. “Through gripping first-hand accounts from civilian and military veterans, alongside expert insights, the series offers a powerful testament to the enduring human spirit in the face of unimaginable adversity,” reads a description in a Blue Ant press release.

From Jan. 27 to Feb. 2, Smithsonian Channel will commemorate Holocaust Remembrance Week with a marathon of compelling war programming such as The Day Hitler Died (Jan. 27 at 11 a.m. ET/8 a.m. PT and Feb. 1 at 10 p.m. ET/7 p.m. PT), The Codebreaker Who Hacked Hitler (Jan. 31 at 9 p.m. ET/PT) and WWII Battles in Color (six episodes x 60 minutes, airing Jan. 31 at 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. ET/10 a.m. to 1 p.m. PT and Feb. 2 at 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. ET/2 p.m. to 6 p.m. PT), “offering a stark reminder of the devastation wrought by World War II,” the release says.

In honour of Black History Month, every Tuesday throughout February the channel will present a series of powerful documentaries, including Black Panthers of WW2 (Feb. 4 at 10 p.m. ET/PT), The Obama Years: The Power of Words (Feb. 11 at 9 p.m. ET/PT), The Lost Tapes (Feb. 11 at 10 p.m. ET/PT), and One Thousand Years of Slavery – The Untold Story (Feb. 18 at 9 p.m. to 11 p.m. ET/PT and Feb. 25 at 9 p.m. to 11 p.m. ET/PT), “shining a light on pivotal moments and figures in history whose legacies continue to shape the world today,” the release says.

Smithsonian Channel’s free preview will also feature new seasons of Ice Airport Alaska (season five, premiering Feb. 17 at 9 p.m. ET/PT) and Clash of Titans (season two, March 16 at 8 p.m. ET/PT).
