Smartphone ownership nearly double of regular cell phones, says MTM report

OTTAWA – Smartphone usage is booming, and the type of smartphone you buy has an effect on how you view streaming data. Those are just two findings from a couple of new reports released this week by MTM on mobile phones in Canada.

The new Mobile Phone report examines the smartphone boom, market trends and wireless providers; a second report, Streaming Media on Smartphones, looks at  the use of audio, video and television on smartphones.

A release from MTM about the reports lists some highlights from each report, which are:

  • Smartphone penetration is booming: for the first time smartphone ownership has nearly doubled that of regular cell phones
  • In terms of smartphones, the iPhone is still in top spot
  • Users of smartphones frequently utilize advanced cell phone features such as accessing the Internet and social networking
  • As Anglophones rapidly acquire smartphones, the number of Anglophones streaming audio, video and TV has grown
  • There are signs of fatigue in terms of streaming video/TV on smartphones
  • Brands of smartphones affect streaming of media (audio and video)
