Slacker Canadian Music Week names young broadcaster of the year winner

TORONTO – Victoria radio host Brittany King has been selected as the recipient of the 2012 Allan Waters Young Broadcaster of the Year Award in memory of Steve Young.

The award, which will be presented March 24 at the Radio Consultants Round Table Breakfast during Slacker Canadian Music Week, was created in the memory of its namesake to honour a rising star in the Canadian broadcast industry.  The recipient is chosen by a Canadian broadcaster committee known as ‘The Friends of Steve Young’, and is awarded annually to a broadcaster under the age of thirty.

King is the midday on-air host and social media administrator at Bell Media's 107.3 Kool-FM in Victoria, an occasional weather personality on CTV News, and host of the community events calendar On The Island which airs on CTV Vancouver Island.

A community activist, King participated in an 1100-kilometre bike trek last year as the media rider for the Canadian Cancer Society's 2011 Cops for Cancer – Tour De Rock. With the help of KOOL FM, CTV-Vancouver Island, and CFAX 1070, she personally raised $102,000 for the cause.  She also volunteers twice per week at the YMCA/YWCA helping kids learn about arts and crafts, and most recently began training and fundraising for the Oak Bay KOOL Half Marathon supporting ‘The Help Fill a Dream’ foundation.
