Six small telcos under CRTC fire for not joining CCTS

OTTAWA – Six telco service providers have been ordered to appear before the CRTC at a show cause proceeding for failing to become members of the Commissioner for Complaints for Telecommunications Services Inc. (CCTS).

The CCTS informed the Commission that several companies had failed to become CCTS members which, under the Telecommunications Act, is compulsory for any telecomunications provider that has been informed by the CCTS of a complaint that falls within the scope of its mandate. Companies are required to join CCTS within five days of having been notified of the complaint.

The CCTS said the companies failed to respond to several letters sent by CCTS between May 2011 and November 2012 attempting to inform them of a complaint. The six telcos, which provide a variety of services to Canadian consumers, are: Adeste (Mississauga, Ont.), Broadline (Brantford, Ont.), iTalk (Richmond Hill, Ont.), Imagen (Vancouver, B.C.), TFF (Los Angeles, Calif.), and Voipgo (Mississauga, Ont.).

The companies will now have to defend themselves at the proceeding and show cause why the CRTC should not find them in violation of the CCTS participation requirement and shut down their operation. They have until April 17 to file a submission responding to the matters raised by the CRTC. Intervenors must file a submission by May 27, 2013.

The Commission expects to make a decision by September 2013.
