Shaw’s next-gen Wi-Fi Pod aims to improve home coverage

CALGARY — Shaw Communications today launched the next generation of its Fibre+ WiFi Pod across its Western Canada footprint, promising to provide Shaw Fibre+ Internet customers more consistent Wi-Fi coverage by reducing dead spots in their home.

Shaw says the new Fibre+ WiFi Pod is faster than the original (although it didn’t quantify how much faster), and provides more range to create a whole-home mesh network that offers the average home seamless connectivity with a single Pod instead of three, says Shaw’s press release.

“Working with the Shaw Gateway modem, our new pod provides better in-home Wi-Fi coverage in those hard-to-reach places,” said Paul Deverell, president, consumer, Shaw Communications, in the release. “It means our customers can continue to enjoy ultrafast connectivity — whether they’re streaming videos in the basement, gaming in the family room, or hosting a videoconference meeting in the office.”

The next-generation Fibre+ WiFi Pod comes with a tri-band Wi-Fi radio capable of delivering high speeds to more connected devices, as well as two Ethernet ports allowing customers to hardwire devices to their Pod, if needed, says the press release.

The new pod is easy to install and customers will receive a self-connect kit with instructions on how to activate them using the Shaw Home app, says the company. The next-generation Fibre+ WiFi Pod is available today for Shaw Fibre+ Internet customers in B.C., Alberta and Saskatchewan. They were made available to customers in Manitoba and Ontario in September.

The pods are available to new and existing customers who want to upgrade at a rental cost of $10 per month for the first device. Customers in larger homes can rent additional pods for $5 per device. Alternatively, customers can purchase one starting at $199 plus taxes.
