VANCOUVER – The Shaw Tower in Vancouver has been awarded the highest level of environmental certification by The Building Owners and Managers Association (BOMA), an accomplishment shared with only five other Canadian buildings.
The building, which is managed in partnership with Westbank Projects Corp., demonstrated outstanding achievements in the areas of energy and water resource management, waste and emission reduction, indoor environment and management systems. It also initiated green programs such as battery recycling, commuter ride-sharing and a joint landlord/tenant action committee, the press release detailed.
"At Shaw, we are committed to promoting sustainability and conservation practices with our employees, in our operations and amongst our customers," said president Peter Bissonnette in the release. "In 2008 alone, Shaw Tower’s recycling programs and use of recycled products diverted nearly 100 metric tonnes of electronics, paper, plastic and glass from landfills. We are proud to operate one of only five buildings nationwide to demonstrate such a high level of environmental awareness in building management and remain dedicated to reducing our footprint nationwide."
BOMA Best certification recognizes achievements above and beyond industry best practice in sustainable and environmentally responsible building management. More than 1,000 buildings are certified by the program across Canada and of these only five – including the Shaw Tower – have achieved the highest level of certification, BOMA Best Level 4.
