CALGARY – Shaw Communications is urging Canadian youth to think of ways that they can help to promote kindness and respect in their schools.

The Calgary-based company pledged to awards grant of up to $5,000 towards initiatives that inspires positivity and inclusivity in a student’s schools through a program known as Shaw Kindness Sticks.

“All entries should suggest an activity or initiative that can empower students to come together and support one another through inclusivity and friendship,” Shaw said in the news release. “Whether it’s a buddy bench that encourages classmates to sit together and get to know each other, a community garden that is dedicated to friendship and respect, or a kindness carnival that brings games and activities that encourage teamwork and cooperation — students are invited to be creative and think outside the box in their ideas.”

To be eligible for grants, students are encouraged to work with their school and submit their ideas online at shaw.ca/KindnessSticks.  Applications are being accepted now through April 30, and students must be returning to their current schools in September 2018.  Once the submission period has closed, a panel of expert judges will review the applications and award 10 grants to the selected students and their schools. Shaw Kindness Sticks grant recipients will be announced in September.

“The best advocates of positivity and respect in schools are the students themselves,” said Shaw’s external affairs VP Chethan Lakshman, in the release.  “We’ve seen extraordinary examples of compassion from young leaders through the Shaw Respect Camps and Pink Shirt Promise, and we know more can be done. The Shaw Kindness Sticks grant aims to turn student-driven ideas that promote positivity into action.”
