TORONTO – The Gord Downie & Chanie Wenjack Fund (DWF) today welcomed Shaw Communications Inc. as a partner in its Legacy Schools program.
DWF’s Legacy Schools program is “designed to empower students to be leaders in reconciliation and foster meaningful conversations about the true history of Canada’s residential schools,” a press release says.
“With the inaugural National Day for Truth and Reconciliation taking place on Sept. 30, this new partnership with Shaw will help more students and educators in Alberta and British Columbia access the Legacy Schools program throughout the 2021/22 school year.”
Last year the program grew nearly 40%.
As of July 2021, there were 2,335 schools registered in the program and 2,939 active Legacy Schools educators, the press release says.
“The work supported by DWF is powering meaningful steps to help move reconciliation in the right direction,” said Chethan Lakshman, vice-president of external affairs at Shaw, in the press release.
“Especially considering the immense interest we have seen in the Legacy Schools program over the last few months, we are grateful for Shaw’s commitment to ensuring we can meet the demand of this important piece of the reconciliation movement in Canada,” said Sarah Midanik, president and CEO of DWF.
