Shaw hosts second auction in support of Canadian athletes

CALGARY – Shaw is staging a second nation-wide auction in support of the Canadian Athletes Now fund and Canadian athletes.

The ‘Making it Happen’ auction will be held on June 7 from 12:00 – 8:00 pm PST, and will be broadcast live on Shaw TV and Shaw Direct. An integrated online auction component will run simultaneously to allow for bids from the web.

"Our goal is to help raise $1 million for Canadian athletes by the end of the year,” said Shaw president Peter Bissonnette, in the press release. “Shaw will match up to $500,000 dollars. When our athletes compete for Canada, we want them to know that Shaw stands behind them. The Making it Happen auction is about raising funds for athletes – but it’s also about raising our national spirit."

The on-line auction site launched Wednesday to allow Canadians to pre-register for the auction and to pre-bid on select items.

Shaw’s first auction was held in Calgary last November and raised over $300,000 towards the $1 million goal. In addition to the two auctions, Shaw said that it also sponsoring the Bobsleigh Canada Skeleton teams, and supports the ‘Hire-an-Athlete’ program which allows five athletes to work part time and be paid full time wages.
