Serial Maven Studios acquires global rights to UK documentary ‘The Dunblane Tapes’

Serial Maven Studios, a Toronto-based studio and global distribution company, announced last week it has acquired international distribution rights to The Dunblane Tapes, a 90-minute documentary that explores the aftermath of the 1996 Dunblane school shooting in Scotland and the grassroots campaign that led to handgun reform in the U.K.

Produced by Candour Productions, The Dunblane Tapes was commissioned by Channel 4 and premiered in the U.K. earlier this year. It will be presented to international buyers at Sunny Side of the Doc this month, Serial Maven Studios said in a June 4 press release.

The acclaimed documentary sees filmmaker Anna Hall return to the story she first covered in 1996, and features new interviews and unprecedented family archives.

“Through never-before-seen footage filmed by bereaved parent John Crozier, the documentary offers an intimate account of one of the most consequential public advocacy movements in modern British history,” Serial Maven Studios’ press release reads. “With its rare archival access, emotional storytelling and ongoing global relevance, The Dunblane Tapes is positioned to connect with international broadcasters and platforms seeking premium feature documentaries with strong social impact and audience resonance.”

On March 13, 1996, 16 children and one teacher were killed by a gunman at Dunblane Primary School in Scotland. Shortly afterwards, Crozier picked up a camera and started documenting the story of one of the most successful grassroots campaigns in British history. Three mothers, outraged that the gunman legally carried four handguns and more than one thousand rounds of ammunition, launched a nationwide campaign to lobby the government to ban the private use of handguns in Britain. Bereaved parents in Dunblane joined the campaign and, over the course of a year, fought against a determined and resourceful gun lobby to bring in stricter gun legislation.

The Dunblane Tapes is a profoundly human story about grief, resilience and the power of collective action in the face of unimaginable loss. While the events at the heart of the film are rooted in the UK, its themes resonate far beyond one country or one tragedy,” Solange Attwood, CEO of Serial Maven Studios, said in the company’s press release. “At Serial Maven Studios, we are focused on partnering with premium producers and distinctive authored filmmakers whose work brings both emotional depth and cultural relevance to international audiences. Anna Hall and the Candour team have crafted an incredibly intimate and important documentary, and we’re proud to help bring it to buyers and audiences around the world.”

“It has been such a privilege to work with this incredible archive and the people in Dunblane who decided that such an horrific tragedy should never happen again. John’s archive is so candid: at times very funny, at times utterly heartbreaking, and to have a window into this grief and determination 30 years on is truly remarkable,” filmmaker Hall, founder and chief creative officer of Candour Productions, said in a statement. “The Dunblane Tapes is one of those opportunities that comes along for a filmmaker once in a lifetime and we are so proud to have shown how these remarkable people changed the lives of everyone in the UK for the better. And we hope that by bringing this film to a wider global audience we can inspire other countries to do the same.”

The Dunblane Tapes is co-directed by Hall and Niamh Kennedy. Hall also serves as executive producer, and Will Stone is producer. Shaminder Nahal is executive producer on behalf of Channel 4. Serial Maven Studios oversees licensing and international production outside commissioning territories.
