Wireless Code: Many contentious issues still remain for wireless consumer protection

GATINEAU – Wireless industry stakeholders are still at loggerheads over a number of issues pertaining to a wireless code of conduct. They include three-year contracts, the co-existence of the code with provincial consumer protection legislation and notifications of data and fee caps, among others. CWC appoints new executive director, board chair

TORONTO – Canadian Women in Communications (CWC) has announced two new appointments to the organization; Joanne Stanley as executive director, and Janice McDonald as new board chair. Stanley brings more than a decade of experience leading not for profit organizations, most recently as co-founder and executive director of Canadian Women in Technology. Prior to that, Stanley held senior positions at the Ontario Centres of Excellence and Bell. For the past six months, she has been working with the CWC as special advisor, strategy and technology sectors, as the organization expands its focus in the technology and digital arena. Canadian TV viewing habits more fragmented than ever: MTM

OTTAWA – While most Canadians receive TV from cable or satellite, an increasing number are either switching to telco-provided services or tuning out altogether, according to new reports from Media Television Monitor. Bite TV launches new look aimed at 18-49 male demo

TORONTO  –  The comedy specialty channel Bite TV has rebranded with a new look to reposition the channel to a core demo of 18-49 year old males. The new look, which is being rolled out on-air, online and in campaign elements, introduces a redesigned logo and two new core colours: a golden yellow and eggplant purple. Spectrum alone won’t create wireless competition – PIAC

OTTAWA – Despite the promise of cheaper and more widespread 4G services, Canadian cellphone customers are unlikely to see any real benefit from the 700 MHz auction to be held later this year says consumer rights group the Public Interest Advocacy Centre (PIAC). 4,260 cell phones later, Recycle My Cell winners announced

OTTAWA – Recycle My Cell, a national recycling program for mobile phones and accessories, announced today the winners of the third annual Recycle My Cell Student Challenge. Held again in partnership with Waste Reduction Week in Canada, the challenge saw Canadian students from kindergarten to post-secondary collecting as many old wireless devices as possible, including cell phones, smartphones, wireless PDAs, pagers, accessories and cell phone batteries.
