VANCOUVER – At Telus' suggestion, the B.C. Supreme Court has ordered a joint shareholder meeting on October 17 to consider both its share exchange proposal and New York hedge fund Mason Capital's related resolutions, providing shareholders with the opportunity to compare and vote on the rival proposals. The order follows a B.C. Supreme Court decision provided orally by Master Muir with written reasons to follow.
The court found it appropriate to have Telus and Mason Capital's resolutions voted on at the October 17 meeting and to allow proxies received by Telus from common shareholders voting in favour…

TORONTO – It’s unlikely a foreign player, like a Softbank, would enter the Canadian market and “roll up” Wind, Mobilicity and Public Mobile to take on the incumbents says a Scotia Capital analyst.
“Even if they were combined, do not have the same potential combined spectrum position like S/CLWR (Softbank, Clearwire). The Canadian "challengers" would have to still acquire more spectrum licenses in the “700 MHz auction in 2013 and the 2.5 GHz auction in 2014 to compete against the incumbents Rogers, Telus and BCE,” writes Jeff Fan in the October 15 edition of…

TORONTO – Telus says it’s the first “premium” Canadian carrier to scrap its $35 activation fee, it will also eliminate the $25 equipment exchange for renewing customers.

The move is part of Telus’ “clear and simple pricing initiatives,” to help customers understand when they are paying for “tangible products or value-added services,” it stated in a news…

VANCOUVER – Telus has announced that the Supreme Court of B.C. has given approval for it to proceed with a vote on its share exchange proposal despite an appeals court ruling that sided with U.S. hedge fund investor Mason Capital.
The Supreme Court of B.C. rejected Mason Capital’s attempt to challenge Telus’ share exchange proposal says Telus. The Court confirmed the validity of the order it had initially granted to Telus enabling the company’s shareholders to vote on its proposal to exchange non-voting shares for common shares on a one-for-one basis. The proposal requires approval…

VANCOUVER – Mason Capital Management, the largest Telus shareholder, said it will go ahead with plans to hold a rival meeting of Telus shareholders after the British Columbia Court of Appeal today overturned an earlier court ruling.
“We are pleased by the Court’s ruling, which fully vindicates our position that the voting shareholders of Telus should have the opportunity to vote on a fair exchange ratio share in a share collapse transaction," Mason said in a statement.
It added that voting shareholders will now have the opportunity to have a “say on the critical issue…

MY FIRST MEETING WITH SHAW Communications president Peter Bissonnette in the winter of 1998 seems like a lifetime ago. It was in Richmond Hill, then the home base of Shaw’s substantial Ontario cable operations. I think it was February.
This was before Bissonnette was even president of the company. Before Shaw and Rogers traded their Ontario and British Columbia cable systems to each other. Before Izzy Asper and JR Shaw split up WIC (Western International Communications). Before the Shaw family spun its media assets into Corus Entertainment. Before a Jean Monty-led BCE bought CTV the first time, claiming – a…

QUEBEC – Telus has purchased Quebec’s KinLogix, a cloud-based electronic medical record (EMR) provider used by some 200 medical clinics in the province. Financial terms of the agreement were not disclosed. It’s the second EMR provider Telus has added following the February 2012 acquisition of Western Canada's Wolf Medical Systems.
The KinLogix EMR is a cloud-based solution used in medical clinics that captures, organizes, and displays critical patient data in one integrated patient record, while streamlining administrative tasks, improving care delivery and patient-physician relations.
Telus says the acquisition furthers its efforts to accelerate the adoption of EMR solutions to “continue to…

VANCOUVER – Why channel surf, when you can channel swipe or tap? Telus has launched its Optik Smart Remote app that turns your iPhone or iPad into the “ultimate” TV control.
