MONTREAL — Bell announced today it has been recognized for its environmental, social and governance (ESG) performance in corporate responsibility and environmental standards by Corporate Knights magazine.
Bell was named the top telecom and fourth company in Canada overall on Corporate Knights’ Best 50 Corporate Citizens list, an annual ranking that “evaluates 332 of the largest Canadian companies on a set of 24 environmental, social and governance (ESG) indicators to single out the Best 50 that Corporate Knights considers ‘the vanguard of corporate sustainability leadership in Canada,’” a Bell press release explains.
Only three telecom providers made the list: BCE Inc….

OTTAWA – The owner of OneSoccer, Timeless Inc., has filed a part one application with the CRTC alleging Rogers Cable is in breach of the Broadcasting Distribution Regulations by refusing to carry the dedicated Canadian soccer channel on its cable systems.
Timeless claims despite a “surge in popularity and success for Canadian soccer” Rogers has denied OneSoccer carriage. Its application indicates only Telus customers can currently receive it (although the channel is also available as a direct-to-consumer OTT offering and is available on Fubo TV in Canada).
Timeless argues Rogers will not carry OneSoccer as a cable channel because it has…

The Broadband Fund has now committed up to $226.5 million to…

OTTAWA – TekSavvy and Bell have both proposed changes to the federal government’s proposed policy direction to the CRTC, which would impact how the government directs the Commission to handle its regulated wholesale Internet regime in very different ways.
TekSavvy argues the government’s proposed policy direction “emphasizes the importance of a healthy wholesale regime” and yet “does nothing concrete to address any of the basic problems that have destabilized the regime over the past 7 years.”
The independent Internet and voice service provider points out the policy direction was issued as the government also rejected petitions to overrule the CRTC’s…

OTTAWA – The CRTC has denied Bell Mobility’s request for it to review and vary a decision directing the company, along with Rogers and Telus, to make changes to the proposed terms and conditions outlined in their GSM-based wholesale mobile roaming tariffs incorporating seamless hand-off and 5G roaming.
“Bell has not presented any compelling arguments or evidence to support its review and vary application,” reads a CRTC letter to Bell, dated July 21, 2022.
Bell’s application, submitted to the CRTC earlier this month, argued the decision (TD 2022-102) reaches beyond the scope of the proceedings that led to it and…

IT HAS NOW BEEN over two weeks since the start of Rogers Communications’ nationwide network outage, which impacted the company’s phone, Internet and cable subscribers – some, for days.
Rogers’ president and CEO Tony Staffieri has issued an apology and attributed the outage to “a network system failure following a maintenance update in our core network”, the company submitted a detailed report to the CRTC about what happened, and a House of Commons standing committee spent the day yesterday hearing from witnesses about the outage – what went wrong, why and what needs to be done…

Bell, Telus offered to help, but Rogers determined it was not possible
OTTAWA – There were no other measures Rogers Communications could have taken to restore 911 services any quicker than it did during the July 8th network outage, the company has told the CRTC in a response to a demand for a detailed report on what happened that day and why.
In a heavily redacted document made public by the CRTC last Friday, Rogers explained it explored the possibility of shutting down its RAN (radio access network), because if customers were unable to connect to it, they would…

WINNIPEG – Xplore Mobile announced today it will be shutting down service as of Aug. 31, 2022, due to regulatory delays.
A letter to customers on the company’s website indicates while it was able to overcome “start up issues of our own making,” competition and the Covid-19 pandemic, it was unable to overcome the “cloud of uncertainty” caused by regulatory delays.
This includes delays around the CRTC’s mobile virtual network operator (MVNO) process, as well as “the high roaming rates that significantly exceed retail prices,” the letter says. (While the CRTC issued a decision on regulating MVNOs last year, it has…

OTTAWA – The work of the government’s Expert Advisory Group on Online Safety, which was appointed in March to provide advice on the government’s proposed approach to dealing with harmful content online, has come to an end with the summary of its final session being posted online last week, but the government will continue seeking input on the matter from Canadians and stakeholders throughout the summer.
