BURNABY, B.C. – A union representing Telus workers is threatening to escalate actions in the absence of a better labour deal with the telecom giant.
Hundreds of Telus workers and members of the United Steelworkers union have been going through picket training over the past several weeks after the union and the country’s third largest telecom could not hammer out a tentative agreement on a new labour deal.

VANCOUVER — Telus last month completed the integration of customers of internet service provider Start.ca after acquiring the small outfit, the company confirmed.
The customer networks of the London, Ont.-based provider of internet, television and home phone services were integrated into Telus last month, “giving customer access to TELUS’ global-leading wireless network, suite of home automation and security, health and entertainment products and services,” Telus told Cartt in a statement.
Richmond, B.C.-based Altima, another ISP that Telus acquired, was integrated into Telus’s network in June 2022.

TORONTO – Telus Corp. has filed a lobby registration with the City of Toronto to talk about infrastructure resiliency.
The purpose of the registration, approved January 5, is to “discuss infrastructure resiliency with a focus on climate change and impacts on critical services, including telecommunications networks.”
The lobby category is filed under emergency planning and restoration.

Regulator leaves open possible regulation on credit card fees more broadly in the future

OTTAWA – The CRTC said today that it will not allow Telus to charge credit card fees to customers in areas where its services are regulated, arguing that it would negatively impact service affordability for Canadians and said such fees could be examined more broadly under a new proposed policy direction from Innovation Canada.

VANCOUVER — Telus Corp. has filed a trademark this month for a program intended to aid newcomers in obtaining services including telecommunications, healthcare and job opportunities, according to a filing on November 3.
The trademark is for the name “Brightstart,” a program that supposedly includes as its services “providing information to newcomers relating to telecommunications and services” and “educational services namely providing resources to newcomers relating to job and career opportunities and resume preparation services.”

OTTAWA – Documents newly made public today at the Competition Tribunal’s hearing into the Competition Bureau’s application to block the proposed merger of Rogers Communications and Shaw Communications reveals Telus’ strategy to stop and delay the deal.
The document, prepared for Telus’ board on the company’s second quarter of 2022, says Telus continued to execute its “top-of-house strategy” where its executive leadership team met “with political leaders to kill, shape and slow the deal.”
