COMMENTARY: The wireless collusion myth

By Greg O’Brien ONE OF THE MORE prominent, persistent fictions when it comes to the Canadian wireless business, is that the market isn’t competitive. Proponents of that myth point to similar pricing, similar services, similar devices, and so forth, as proof Canadian wireless operators march in lock-step, perhaps even consulting one another behind the scenes looking for ways to maintain the status quo. You don’t have to dig very far on Twitter or Reddit, or even in talking to family members, to hear such balderdash. If you pay attention to the market, however, you can easily see a high level of competitive… Continue Reading

B.C. court sides with Shaw in ad row (updated)

By Ahmad Hathout VANCOUVER – A British Columbia court has dismissed an injunction application filed by Telus over Shaw’s promotion of its new Fibre+ internet product launched earlier this year. In a September 11 ruling made public this week, the B.C. Supreme Court said it is unconvinced by Telus’ argument that the average customer would care about the differences between Shaw’s hybrid fibre-coaxial cable network and Telus’ fibre to the home technology when deciding on a broadband provider. Telus asked the court in June to force Shaw to stop using “Fibre+” for its highest internet speeds until a final determination is made… Continue Reading

TPIA: CNOC, Distributel, TekSavvy demand CRTC action

By Denis Carmel GATINEAU – Enough delay, say the independent ISPs. TekSavvy, Distributel and the Competitive Network Operators of Canada on Friday filed applications with the CRTC demanding the incumbent telco and cable carriers file new tariffs as ordered by the Commission in its August 2019 decision setting new wholesale internet rates (CRTC 2019-288). The decision gave the network owners until September 14, 2019 to do so, but only Telus filed. Later, SaskTel filed its tariff pages after a CRTC reminder. The other incumbents declined to do so, pending the three appeals of the decision filed shortly after the August 2019 rates… Continue Reading

GATINEAU – After the CRTC found Iristel and Telus in breach of the Telecommunications Act, the former for traffic simulation in the 867 area code and the latter for the actions it took against Iristel, the Commission started a process to determine whether an Administrative Monetary Penalty should be imposed. CNOC supported the stay request, the Public Interest Advocacy Centre asked the deadline be postponed and Telus asked for the process to be suspended (it may well have an R&V of its own… Continue Reading
