Summer trend report: regulatory concerns overshadow telecom sector investments

TORONTO – While recent events, including the possible entry of US behemoth Verizon into Canada and Monday’s cabinet shuffle, have left many in the investment community wondering how these will affect the regulatory landscape, the telecom sector won’t see an impact on the bottom line just yet. Financial results for the second quarter of 2013 will not reflect any of these regulatory concerns, says BMO Capital Markets Second analyst Tim Casey.   “We expect Verizon will continue to quietly negotiate with the owners of the existing new entrants – Wind and Mobilicity – with… Continue Reading

“Challenging Q3” means Corus will miss the low-end of 2013 profit guidance

TORONTO – Despite gains in net profit (thanks largely to the sale of non-controlling interests in Food Network Canada) and specialty TV advertising revenue in its fiscal third quarter, Corus announced Thursday that the company will miss the low-end of its profit guidance for FY2013. Net income attributable to shareholders for the three months ended May 31, 2013 was $89.9 million, a 108% increase compared to $43.2 in the third quarter of 2012. Verizon news causes dip in Telus, Rogers shares – and a buying opportunity

TORONTO – Reaction to last week’s news of Verizon’s entry into the Canadian wireless market has sent Telus and Rogers shares into decline, while market caps for BCE, Shaw, Bell Aliant and MTS have increased – a move that Canaccord Genuity analyst Dvai Ghose calls “baffling.” Ghose says Rogers and Telus were oversold based on the perceived risk of Verizon entering Canada. Rogers and Telus shares have dropped 10.3% and 12.1%, respectively since June 17, when the Globe and Mail first reported Verizon was looking at getting into the Canadian market by purchasing Wind Mobile. UPDATED (3): Commission approves Bell?/Astral takeover – with 13 conditions; boosts benefits by $72M

GATINEAU – The CRTC today approved the $3.2 billion purchase of Astral Media by BCE Inc., but Bell’s regulatory people have MUCH paperwork to file before July 29th in order to satisfy the various conditions of the approval. That said, there doesn’t appear to be anything surprising in the decision which could scuttle the transaction. As most are well aware, this is the second time Bell attempted to purchase Astral, as the Commission said no to the original 2012 deal last October. Bell executives pronounced themselves pleased Friday morning, and so they are obviously okay with all the conditions, all of… Continue Reading
