Broadcasting Participation Fund board warns it may have to suspend for lack of funding

By Ahmad Hathout OTTAWA – The fund that bankrolls consumer interest participation in CRTC hearings is warning that it is at a “critical juncture” with not enough money available to reimburse participants in broadcasting proceedings. The Broadcasting Participation Fund said in a press release last week that it had less than $330,000 remaining in the fund to begin the year. CRTC to hold hearing on indigenous channel additions to basic TV packages

OTTAWA – The CRTC said Wednesday it will hold a hearing beginning on June 28 to consider applications by two not-for-profit indigenous television networks to add their channels to the digital basic television packages of the broadcasters. The regulator received applications from Nunavut Independent Television Network and Inuit TV Network to add Uvagut TV and Inuit TV, respectively, to the $25 packages that consist of channels the broadcasters must carry by regulation. ISED announces 23 organizations getting funding for digital literacy

OTTAWA – Innovation Minister Francois-Philippe Champagne announced Monday that 23 not-for-profit organizations across the country will get funding to help address digital literacy. The funding is part of the second phase of the federal government’s Digital Literacy Exchange Program, which is committing $17.6 million over three years to help 100,000 Canadians “gain the skills they need to participate in the digital economy,” including using computers, mobile devices and the internet.
