TORONTO – The Ontario Chapter of the Society of Telecommunications Engineers announced Monday that Daniel Sacolle (Cogeco Cable), Bill McMillan (TVC Inc.) and James Myles (Rogers Cable TV) have been elected by the membership to serve on the board of directors for the 2009/10 term. They assumed their roles as of January 1, 2009.

TORONTO – While still posting healthy subscriber gains across all products, the rate of growth in 2008 at Rogers Wireless, cable, telecom and Internet slowed in 2008, the company announced with the release of its preliminary year-end subscriber results this morning.
The company’s Apple iPhone rollout continued to proceed well as Rogers added 130,000 customers for the device in the quarter, 40% of which were new customers.

TORONTO – The late Ted Rogers has left voting control of Rogers Communications Inc. (RCI) to a private trust called the Rogers Control Trust, and members of the Rogers family are the beneficiaries, the company made official in a press release today.
According to the statement, the Rogers family holding companies controlled by the Rogers Control Trust together own approximately 90.9% of the Class A voting shares of RCI and 7.5% of the Class B non voting shares. The trust holds voting control of the Rogers group of companies for “the benefit of successive generations of the Rogers family”.

OTTAWA – The CRTC has dismissed complaints against TSN2 from rival sports networks, saying the sports channel does have the authority to time-shift the programming it offers on its authorized split-feed service.

TORONTO – Rogers Wireless has rolled out its 3.5 next generation network across the country.
Calling it “the fastest mobile network in Canada”, the Rogers press release says that it’s the first North American wireless carrier to offer customers peak downloads of 7.2Mbps on a national network. The network allows “customers to communicate in innovative ways with mobile multimedia, download large files ultra-fast and utilize Internet speeds on the go that are similar to a standard broadband connection.”

TORONTO – Rogers has received CRTC approval to launch a local, 24-hour news channel in the Greater Toronto Area.
Programming for the new channel will consist of local news, traffic, weather, business, sports and entertainment information “devoted exclusively to residents in the Greater Toronto and commuting areas”, the decision read. The channel will also include news items from other Rogers owned media properties including The Fan 590, 680News, Sportsnet, the Toronto Blue Jays, and the Rogers publishing division (With titles like Maclean’s, Flare, Chatelaine and Canadian Business).
