The Federal Court of Appeal has set a date for a hearing into whether the CRTC erred in freezing Rogers’s ability to move and remove certain Corus channels.
The court will hear the case on September 23 at 9:30 am in a special sitting in Toronto, according to an order dated Friday.
Rogers filed the original application against two confidential November decisions of the CRTC that froze its ability to remove or relocate three Corus channels: Slice, Home Network, and Flavour Network.
Rogers has argued that the Broadcasting Act’s standstill rule – which requires the two companies…

A landowner is asking a British Columbia court to scrap a right-of-way that gives Rogers the authority to build a 115-foot cell tower because it says the term “telecommunications facility” in the contract it inherited is vague and provides no certainty as to the size of the tower Rogers intended to build.
In September 2024, Surrey-based glazing and aluminum company Alummen Holdings Inc. (dba Vision West Aluminum) purchased from CPO Enterprises Ltd. the property located in the Gloucester Industrial Park in Langley. With the purchase came a statutory right-of-way (SROW) registered to the title of the property that…

TPX (The Podcast Exchange), the Toronto-based podcast advertising reseller and branded content producer, has sent a letter to creditors notifying them that the company plans to file a notice of intention (NOI) under the Bankruptcy and Insolvency Act.
The NOI buys the company time to develop a proposal to its creditors as it works to stabilize the business, giving it an initial 30-day stay of proceedings as it works to ensure suppliers are paid so it can continue operating.
Founded in 2017 by Jean-Marie Heimrath (who retired as founding CEO in 2021) and Jeff Ulster (who…

The United Steelworkers union (USW) is alleging Rogers is refusing to return to the bargaining table with striking workers in Abbotsford, B.C., and is instead bringing in managers from Alberta and other parts of British Columbia to do the work of unionized employees on strike.
The 25 technicians who are members of USW Local 1944 have been on strike since June 19, after negotiations with Rogers failed to deliver a contract that ensured equal pay for the Abbotsford workers when compared to their counterparts in Vancouver and Surrey, the USW says. The Abbotsford…

The public broadcaster and a trade group representing independent producers are floating the use of platform home pages as a possible way to amplify the discoverability of Canadian content.
Representatives from CBC/Radio-Canada said Wednesday that the CRTC should ensure that discoverability and marketing of such content are not counted toward distributors’ contribution requirements, including both the base financial component and traditional Canadian programming expenditures (CPE). The reason, according to CBC execs, is that vertically integrated broadcasting giants already support discoverability and promotion of CanCon “as a regular course of their business.”
Indeed, VIs including Bell and Rogers have said…

Rogers says it is being hamstrung by having to set aside money for the $750-million Broadband Fund that it says is not efficiently distributing money to projects.
The cable giant said in a Part 1 application made public Monday that it has to tie-up millions of dollars in “uncalled” contributions – amounts that the telecom must be ready deliver to the National Contribution Fund (NCF) when requested – which is creating large liabilities on its balance sheet.
It is asking the CRTC to change the NCF’s collection practices to prioritize the amounts that are waiting to be collected over…
