TORONTO — Rogers Communications has begun rolling out a new streaming platform called Ignite SmartStream for its broadband subscribers, with select customers getting a first look last week.
Ignite SmartStream integrates popular streaming apps such as Netflix, Amazon Prime Video, hayu, YouTube, Rogers’ Sportsnet Now and more, with voice search. Live TV is not currently available on the streaming platform as Ignite TV remains the place for that.
That said, SmartStream users can get a suite of Corus Entertainment TV channels if they also subscribe to the broadcaster’s StackTV package within Amazon Prime Video.

TORONTO – Telus today was named the fastest internet service provider (ISP) in Canada by PCMag.
The publication recognized Telus as the fastest among the major ISPs. Rogers placed second and Bell, third, among the six large ISPs PCMag recognizes in Canada. The magazine used results from 33,782 tests in Canada taken between June 1, 2019, and June 2, 2020.

NORFOLK COUNTY – Rogers Communications, in partnership with Southwestern Integrated Fibre Technology (SWIFT), has officially begun to build a fibre network that will service 71 kilometres of underserved roads in Norfolk County, just southwest of Hamilton.
The project is meant to improve broadband access to over 2,100 homes in and around Wilsonville, Boston, Bealton, Dundurn, Waterford, Townsend Centre, Villa Nova, Bloomsburg and several rural roads between and surrounding these communities, says the SWIFT press release.,

OTTAWA – Broadcast technology and services company Ross Video announce today Kevin Cottam (above) has been promoted to vice-president, global sports and live events.
Cottam joined Ross in 2011 as a demonstration artist and trainer, and has a background steeped in sports and live production, says the annoiuncement.

GATINEAU — The CRTC today denied Bell’s application to review and vary the Commission’s December 2019 decision that ordered Bell to deploy one-way toll-free (TF) trunks between Bell’s network and Rogers’s network to carry TF traffic destined for Bell TF numbers.
Shortly after the Commission released its decision on December 2, 2019, Bell filed an R&V application which said the correctness of the ruling was in substantial doubt. In addition, Bell requested a stay of the decision until the Commission ruled on the R&V application.

MONTREAL — A team from Montreal’s INRS (Institut national de la recherche scientifique) has been using its unique simulator to participate in the International Telecommunication Union’s (ITU) evaluation of new proposed standards for 5G.
INRS presented the results of its evaluations of various candidates’ Radio Interface Technology (RIT) specifications at an ITU meeting in Geneva in February 2020. To be approved by the ITU, 5G technology standards must meet a set of criteria known as IMT-2020 (International Mobile Telecommunications-2020), and several countries and consortiums of companies are proposing RIT as a new standard for 5G.
