PIRACY: Broadcasters go for Gold

OTTAWA – The Federal Court of Canada has granted Bell Media, Groupe TVA, and Rogers Media an interim injunction against GoldTV.biz and GoldTV.ca, ordering GoldTV to disable its IPTV services pending a final decision on what is gearing up to be a test case for the big broadcasters efforts to require all Internet service providers (ISPs) to block unlicenced web sites they say are pirating their content. In addition, the injunction forbids the as yet unknown individuals or entities operating the services, called John Doe 1 and John Doe 2 in the documents filed with the court, from transferring "access,… Continue Reading

Québecor vs. Bell: Vidéotron maintains it has a TPIA right to Cablevision’s network

GATINEAU – As Cartt.ca has reported earlier, Bell and Québecor tell a radically different story when it comes to Québecor division Vidéotron’s desire to offer TPIA service via Bell division Cablevision du Nord – and those differences are even more evident in Quebecor’s reply to the CRTC, filed on August 6th. One of the arguments made by Québecor is that competition and its benefits – something the Competition Bureau said in its Broadband Report released this week is a necessity – does not exist in the northwestern quadrant of Québec, seeing as how Abitibi-Témiscamingue is only served by Télébec… Continue Reading

Inside Wiring: Bell vs. Cloudwifi update

GATINEAU – Last summer Cloudwifi, a Kitchener-based ISP that operates mostly in the apartment and condo space, filed an application with the CRTC requesting an order stating Bell Canada can’t interfere with a customer’s use of the inside wire. The CRTC agreed with the independent ISP but Bell appealed saying because Cloudwifi was not a local exchange carrier (LEC) or a BDU, it had no legal, regulatory, or other rights of use or access to the facilities at issue. On July 17, 2019, the Commission asked interested parties for applications on the review of CRTC decision… Continue Reading

Bell’s proposed purchase peeves Péladeau

MONTREAL – As predicted, Quebecor CEO Pierre Karl Péladeau hates the proposed purchase of the V network and Noovo.ca by Bell Media. The acquisition of the network and its digital assets by Bell “will further undermine an already precarious ecosystem by allowing a dominant player to become still more so,” reads a Quebecor press release sent out about 24 hours after Bell’s announcement Wednesday. “The transaction will significantly alter the balance of power between media companies and have major consequences,” adds the statement. The company worres that Bell, with its power in “conventional television, specialty channel, pay TV,… Continue Reading

Bell Media to buy V Network and Noovo.ca

Bell looks to burnish money-losing network MONTREAL – Bell Media today announced it will purchase the conventional TV network V and its related digital assets, including the ad-supported VOD service Noovo.ca, from Groupe V Média. The deal, which would bring Bell its first French-language TV network, is pending CRTC and Competition Bureau approval (We’re expecting vigorous opposition from Quebecor CEO Pierre Karl Péladeau when the application to the Commission is made public). Those with good memories will recall V used to be TQS and was co-owned by Cogeco and CTVglobemedia. It’s current owner purchased the station in 2008, when it was… Continue Reading

Vidéotron wants to launch as a third-party provider in Abitibi-Témiscamingue (updated)

But has to fight Bell for it at the CRTC MONTREAL –Vidéotron said last week it plans to offer consumers and small businesses in the Abitibi-Témiscamingue “a full line of telecommunications services, including Internet, television and IP telephone service” by the end of 2019. The western Quebec region of 145,000 (most of whom live in the cities of Rouyn-Noranda and Val-d’Or, but are spread over 57,000 sq. km.) is primarily served now by Cablevision du Nord, a cable company and ISP which is owned by Bell Canada. The interesting part of this story is how Vidéotron plans to service the region: as… Continue Reading

Canadian Specialty Services Report: CRTC filings show trends, and confounds, too

Some numbers truly unexpected as we break down the report on individual specialty services INDEPENDENT CANADIAN SPECIALTY services are punching well above their weight when it comes to making and delivering Canadian content, despite the fact they live in a far lower margin world than those owned by vertically integrated companies. Collectively, independent, or non-vertically-integrated specialty channels spent a whopping 59% of their revenue on Canadian content in 2018, far outpacing VI channels, which collectively spent 38% of revenues on Cancon in the 2018 broadcast year, which ended August 31st. These numbers are according to the CRTC’s 2018 Individual Discretionary and… Continue Reading
