OTTAWA – Telus, Cogeco, Eastlink and MTS Allstream have all told the CRTC that they are opposed to BCE and Rogers’ proposal to take control of sports channels Leafs TV, NBA TV Canada and Gol TV Canada from parent Maple Leaf Sports & Entertainment (MLSE).
The interventions filed by the independent distributors claim that the move, which comes as part of the BCE/Rogers $1.32 billion bid for a majority stake in MLSE, “are bad for the Canadian broadcasting industry, further extending the control exerted by these large vertically integrated conglomerates”.

OTTAWA – Rémi Racine has been appointed as chairperson of the CBC/Radio-Canada board of directors for a five year term.
Racine, who was first appointed as a member of the CBC/Radio-Canada board of directors in 2007, was re-appointed for a second four-year term last December. GATINEAU – In what could be described as a case of “turnabout is fair play”, Globalive has formally questioned the Canadian bona fides of Telus and has asked the CRTC to hold a public hearing on the matter.

OTTAWA – The passage of Bill C-11 in the House of Commons trumpeted by the government Tuesday was met with trepidation by some industry stakeholders.

PETERBOROUGH, ON – Capella Telecommunications has bought ESA Communication Systems, the voice, video and data systems distributor announced Monday. Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed.
Oshawa-based ESA Communication Systems sells, leases and installs satellite, terrestrial microwave, radar and HF antennas for the broadcast industry. OTTAWA – The Internet is running out of space to handle a rapidly growing number of connected devices such as smartphones, tablets, gaming consoles, refrigerators, security cameras and other electronics.
The situation is so dire that regions such as the Asia Pacific have already run out of Internet addresses. Others such as Europe will see the “full” sign this fall.
