HALIFAX – Pizza and TV have always gone together. So it’s apt that EastLink is thanking the volunteers who work on their community channel productions with pizza parties and lunches.
The cableco is honouring its volunteers at 13 stations in Nova Scotia and Prince Edward Island as part of National Volunteer Week celebrations.
“Our volunteers are pivotal to all of our productions. They provide essential support to our employees and it provides them with a great opportunity to learn more about the television and broadcasting industry,” said Michael Smith, Director of EastLink Television. “We think it is important to…

OTTAWA-GATINEAU – A local market won’t be considered competitive until one-quarter of the households in it get their home phone from a newcomer, the CRTC said Thursday.
The 44,000-word decision made the newcomers like cable and third party VOIP providers very happy but angered the incumbent telcos, who erupted with anger and say they won’t stand for the decision.
“Aliant fully intends to appeal this decision,” said Heather Tulk, vice-president of residential markets at Aliant, the company whose application for deregulation launched the review.
There are three main aspects to the decision. 1) Competitors must gain 25% market…

The release and a conference call are scheduled for 4 p.m. Look for cartt.ca reports shortly thereafter.
Spurred by a request made by Aliant to deregulate its eastern markets due to the severe customer losses at the hands of local cable firm EastLink (which top 30% in some areas), the Commission hosted a week-long public hearing in September, as reported extensively by cartt.ca.
Two of the key issues all are waiting on are: the threshold…

OTTAWA – In a submission which generally backs a cable company’s request to use the local avail ad time to market its telephony and high speed Internet products along with programming services, the Canadian Association of Broadcasters has also asked the CRTC for more cost clarity.
An intervention filed with the Commission last week mostly supports an application made by Halifax-based MSO EastLink to expand what the broadcast distribution regulations say can be promoted during the so-called "local availability" time on American cable channels. Those channels (like CNN, A&E and The Golf Channel) make two minutes per hour of…

I HOPE I HAVEN’T BEEN helping put Dave Armstrong out of business.
Dave is the owner-operator of Markdale Cable, a 1,200-customer operation serving the folks in and around Markdale, Ont. – a ski-country/farming community (and home of Chapman’s Ice Cream) about 40 kms southeast of Owen Sound, Ont.
I’ve been a skier since I could walk and my family and I are part-time customers of Markdale Cable (weekends and holidays during the winter). I needed high speed Internet at the place we rented for the season and Markdale Cable delivered. Dave even showed up on New Year’s Day to…
