MONTREAL – Cogeco Cable said that it is broadcasters’ “rampant spending to purchase major US network programming” that is at the real root of what ails the industry, not simply the erosion of market share and advertising revenue.

MONTREAL – Following the lead of its peers, Cogeco Cable’s Canadian operations continued to grow during the recession, the company reported today. The company continues to struggle in Portugal, although it is reporting some positive indications there.
Fourth quarter 2009 consolidated revenue increased by 8% to reach $307.8 million, when compared to the corresponding period of the prior year. Driven by increased revenue-generating units combined with rate increases and the financial results generated by the acquisition of Cogeco Data Services in the last quarter of fiscal 2008, fourth-quarter Canadian operations revenue went up by $34.8 million, or 15.8%.

TORONTO – Cogeco Data Services has signed a 10-year, multi-million dollar agreement with the City of Toronto to upgrade its wide area network services to one of the most technologically sophisticated, all-optical networks in Canada.

MONTREAL – Cogeco Cable’s Louise St-Pierre has been promoted to senior vice-president, residential services, the company has announced.
In this newly created position, she will be responsible for customer service, technical operations, engineering, information technology, telecommunications, human resources, TVCogeco and community relations in Canada.
St-Pierre (pictured) had previously been VP customer services and Ontario operations. No decision has been made whether or not to replace with another head of Ontario ops, said a spokesperson.

The activities of Cogeco Cable Quebec Inc. have been transferred to Cogeco Cable Quebec General Partnership (a newly formed general partnership), while substantially all of the activities of Cogeco Cable Canada Inc. were transferred to Cogeco Cable Canada LP (a newly formed limited partnership).

MONTREAL – Cogeco Cable has launched a new high-speed Internet package (HSI) in Ontario that will allow customers to achieve a download speed of 50 Mpbs, 1.5 Mbps upstream, and a monthly capacity of 150 GB download.
Called the ‘HSI Ultimate’ package, the service comes with Cogeco’s "full range of security services” and includes the modem rental. MONTREAL – While growth in the television and radio divisions powered Cogeco’s Canadian operations, its Portuguese subsidiary Cabovisão pulled down the company’s third quarter financial results.
For the quarter ended May 31, 3009, consolidated revenue increased by 11.4% to $316.3 million, and consolidated operating income from continuing operations before amortization grew by 10.4% to reach $129.4 million.
But after taking in to account various losses at Cabovisão, the company reported a consolidated net loss of $93.8 million for the first nine months of fiscal 2009, compared to net income of $15.5 million in the prior year.
