Licence Renewals: Why broadcasters Cancon spend plans are inadequate and negotiating tactics, questionable

GATINEAU – The large broadcasters’ current Canadian Programming Expenditure (CPE) and Programs of National Interest (PNI) proposals are wholly inadequate, according to the creatives representing actors, performers, writers and directors. The Alliance of Canadian Cinema, Television and Radio Artists (ACTRA) said in its appearance before the CRTC’s large English-language broadcasters’ licence renewal hearing on Wednesday the impact of the proposals would be “devastating” on Canadian programming and the Canadian broadcasting system because they would result in a reduction of nearly $100 million in spending over the next licence term. “In our view, this would be regressive, contrary to the Commission’s objective… Continue Reading

WHISTLER – One of the world’s top technology, media and telecommunications trends forecasters, Deloitte Canada’s Duncan Stewart, spent an hour on stage Tuesday urging CCSA delegates to try and view all tech hype with a skeptic’s eye – and use data instead. He identified 3D printers, e-readers and virtual reality headsets as products whose results in the marketplace have nowhere near matched the media hysteria around them. Turns out people don’t want little mills in their homes making do-dads out of plastic or whatever. Turns out humans still like physical books (e-reader sales have plateaued and print book sales have edged… Continue Reading

CCSA Connect 2016: Don’t put millennials in a box

WHISTLER – If there’s one thing millennials hate, it’s to be thought of as one homogeneous group – and to market to them, or employ them, thinking that way is a sure road to disaster. This was part of the message delivered in an entertaining keynote Tuesday morning by Curt Steinhorst from the Center for Generational Kinetics (pictured). He was speaking to the delegates at the 2016 Canadian Cable Systems Alliance Connect Conference. Groups of generations, be they Baby Boomers, or Millennials or any other group, don’t meet every definition foisted upon them. “They’re not a box,” he said, “which every… Continue Reading
