Why changes to funding and spectrum is needed for rural broadband providers

OTTAWA – Groups representing rural and remote broadband providers lauded the federal government for efforts to improve broadband connectivity in rural Canada in a Parliamentary committee on Tuesday. But they added that the government needs to adopt new rules that are more appropriate for smaller providers. One of the big issues, particularly related to the Connect to Innovate (CTI) program, is the complex nature of the application and the extensive reporting requirements. CCSA calls everyone home for Connect 2018

QUISPAMSIS, N.B. – The Canadian Cable Systems Alliance announced today the group will be celebrating its 25th anniversary in its home province. The annual Connect 2018 will be held September 17-19, 2018 at the historic Algonquin Resort, located in the picturesque (and easily accessible) seaside town of St. Andrews by-the-Sea, N.B., about an hour’s drive from Saint John. UPDATED: 154 communities in coastal B.C. to see faster broadband; CityWest to help with subsea fibre

VANCOUVER – Over 150 communities along the entire British Columbia coast will receive improved high-speed Internet thanks to a joint federal-provincial investment of just over $45 million. The funding was announced Wednesday by Jane Philpott, Minister of Indigenous Services, on behalf of ISED minister Navdeep Bains.  Of the 154 communities, 44 First Nations will benefit. Drexel’s new senior leadership team includes Jennifer Salmon, JD Abram

CCSA applauds report’s recommendations for improving broadband infrastructure

QUISPAMSIS, NB – The Canadian Cable Systems Alliance (CCSA) is offering a thumbs-up to the new Standing Committee on Finance’s (FINA) report for its recommendations on measures to enhance communications infrastructure for rural and remote communities. The report, Driving Inclusive Growth: Spurring Productivity And Competitiveness In Canada, is based on pre-budget consultations between September 19 to December 1, 2017 in advance of the 2018 federal budget.  The report's summary says the annual process is the central means for Canadian individuals and businesses to express their budgetary priorities to the federal government. Before the CCSA, he worked for the Canadian Cable Television Association, the Canadian Association of Internet Providers, the Canadian Association of Broadcasters and the Canadian Media Producers Association (Telus and the CRTC, too).
