SCTE launches course on IPv6; calls for technical session proposals

EXTON, PA – The Society of Cable Telecommunications Engineers (SCTE) is offering an on-line course on IPv6 as part of a comprehensive effort to prepare the cable industry for the transition to the next generation network layer Internet protocol.

The ‘IPv6: Impact on Cable Networks’ course has been developed in partnership with Cisco Systems and will run for a seven-week period beginning May 24, 2010.  The course, which will provide an overview of the capabilities and roles of IPv6 and DOCSIS 3.0 in the cable network management process, has been designed to help cable engineers and technical professionals to understand the impact of IPv6, as well as the features and benefits that are expected to accompany the adoption of the protocol.

Created to deal with the imminent depletion of the IPv4 address space and to provide global routing scalability, IPv6 uses a 128 bit or 16 byte, 39 character hexadecimal address system to create a pool of 340 Trillion, Trillion, Trillion (10 x 1038) addresses.  Cable operators using IPv6 will be able to provide individual addressing to billions of network devices in the future.

Registration through April 30 is $200 for SCTE members and $275 for non-members. After April 30, the registration fee will be $250 for members and $325 for non-members.  Registration and additional links to SCTE IPv6 resources are available at www.scte.org/ipv6

In other news, the SCTE is seeking proposals for technical sessions to be conducted at the 2010 edition of SCTE Cable-Tec Expo, set for October 20–22 in New Orleans.

The theme of this year’s expo is ‘Playing Cable’s Technology Tune’, reflecting the ability of cable networks to provide compelling and diverse services to the customer.

The deadline for submissions is May 21, and the program committee will announce selected presentations by June 25, 2010.  Click here for more details on topics of interest and how to submit a proposal.
