SCTE Cable-Tec Expo records significant rise in attendees

ORLANDO – SCTE Cable-Tec Expo 2012 continued its growth as a venue for enhanced education and as a forum for the international cable marketplace this year reports the Society of Cable Telecommunications Engineers (SCTE). SCTE Cable-Tec Expo 2013 will take place from Sept. 18-20 at the Ernest N. Morial Convention Center in New Orleans.

The Oct. 17-19 event at the Orange County Convention Center in Orlando featured significant increases in a variety of key areas:  Substantial growth in registered attendees for the 2012 pre-conference symposium on the Digital Home; continued growth in the number of international attendees; and a record number of technical workshop sessions.

Paid registration for “The Digital Home: Preparing for the Future,” the full-day symposium prior to the start of Expo, was up 47%. The conference program included a record 80 technical workshops, as well as a standing-room-only session on the new DOCSIS 3.1 specification.  In addition, international attendance, featuring representation from a record 69 countries, was up 3%. Total attendance for the three-day event was approximately 9,200.

“The continued expansion of the quantity and quality of our SCTE Cable-Tec Expo programs is a direct reflection of the industry’s need to speed the deployment of current and future technologies,” said Mark Dzuban, president and CEO of SCTE.  “By working closely with CableLabs and NCTA, we are accelerating the development of training for the next generation of cable engineering and operations professionals.”

SCTE Cable-Tec Expo 2012 began with a keynote conversation between Time Warner Cable Executive Vice President and CTO Mike LaJoie and entrepreneur and innovator Dean Kamen, a summit discussion among top executives of NCTA, CableLabs and SCTE, and insights from technology executives with cable system operators of all size.

The DOCSIS 3.1 session was designed to increase understanding of the next-generation of DOCSIS high-speed Internet technology.  The session included a panel discussion among representatives of CableLabs, Comcast and Time Warner Cable, as well as a presentation by Daniel Howard, senior vice president, engineering and CTO of SCTE, on SCTE plans to develop training and best practices that can speed the deployment of DOCSIS 3.1 technologies in current networks.

SCTE Cable-Tec Expo is renowned as a venue that helps the cable industry to reduce costs, deploy new services and increase customer satisfaction. The event features industry leaders confronting key technical challenges; hundreds of hands-on, technology-centric exhibits; a full array of robust and relevant technical workshops; the SCTE IP Challenge; the International Cable-Tec Games; and valuable learning that is driven by peer-to-peer interaction and networking.

Kevin Hart, executive vice president and CTO of Cox Communications, will serve as Program Committee chairman for the 2013 event.
