Screens battle for dominance, but continue to serve different purposes for now: MTM report

OTTAWA – As Canadians continue to embrace a multi-screen world, which screen will consumers choose to watch content on when all four screen options are available?

According to the latest report from Media Technology Monitor, entitled “4-Screen Canadians:  A Glimpse into Multi-Screen Media Behaviour”, only one in ten of Canadian Internet users currently own four screens connected to the Internet – a computer, smartphone, tablet and TV.

The report says that the computer continues to be an important device for the consumption of content, even with three other screen choices, while the smartphone remains primarily a communications medium for the likes of calls, text, e-mail, and Facebook.  However, the smartphone is an important secondary device for media (e.g. reading news, online video, streaming audio) among 4-Screen Canadians.

The television set is not the dominant screen for online TV among 4-Screen Canadians, however, most online TV services are not yet designed with the television set in mind, continues the report.  Netflix, on the other hand, is designed for that purpose, and among 4-Screen Netflix subscribers, the TV is by far the dominant screen.

The report is now available to subscribers on the MTM website. MTM is the research arm of the CBC.
