SaskTel to launch infiNET in Shaunavon by end of month

REGINA – SaskTel announced Wednesday it will soon launch its infiNET service in Shaunavon, Sask., as part of the provincial Crown corporation’s $200-million Rural Fibre Initiative.

SaskTel said in a press release it expects to begin connecting homes to infiNET service in select areas of Shaunavon by the end of November.

Powered by SaskTel’s fibre broadband network, infiNET service delivers internet speeds close to 1 Gbps, according to the release.

“The Rural Fibre Initiative is a multi-phase program that will see SaskTel invest $200 million to bring infiNET service to over 110,000 residents and businesses living and operating in more than 130 rural communities,” the release explained.

Once the announced phases of the initiative are complete, SaskTel’s infiNET network will reach approximately 80 per cent of all households in the province, SaskTel said.

“Our customers are our top priority at SaskTel and we’re firmly committed to ensuring they have access to the tools and technologies they need to connect to what matters most to them,” Charlene Gavel, SaskTel president and CEO, said in the release. “We’re excited to bring our infiNET network to the people of Shaunavon so they and the community can continue to grow and prosper.”

“The Government of Saskatchewan recognizes how essential a fast and reliable internet connection is to the overall success of our people and province as a whole,” said Doug Steele, MLA for Cypress Hills. “I am pleased with SaskTel’s ongoing efforts to expand their advanced fibre broadband and 5G wireless networks across Saskatchewan ensuring more families and businesses can access and benefit from the opportunities the digital world has to offer.”

In October, SaskTel announced it would soon launch infiNET in Indian Head, Maple Creek and Rosetown, also as part of its Rural Fibre Initiative. SaskTel said at the time it anticipated select areas in the three communities would be fibre-ready by mid-November.
