REGINA – SaskTel will provide high speed Internet service to 28 First Nations communities in the province over the next two years as part of the Saskatchewan Infrastructure Improvement Program which began in 2009.
The company said Wednesday that it will also deliver 4G wireless coverage to 19 of those communities that do not currently have wireless coverage – the remaining 9 communities already have 4G. The first 12 communities are tentatively scheduled to be complete this year, while the remaining 16 are anticipated to be connected by the end of 2012.
Aboriginal Affairs and Northern Development Canada is contributing $8.8 million to Saskatoon Tribal Council (STC) through the First Nations Infrastructure Fund, and SaskTel said that it will be investing an equal amount, with the STC assuming an administrative role.
