REGINA – SaskTel is expanding its data centre footprint in Regina after receiving approval to proceed with purchasing a Tier III Data Centre in White City for $10.7 million.

The new facility will add 10,000 square feet of data centre space to the company’s existing 41,000 square feet, which is currently spread amongst seven different data centre locations in Regina and Saskatoon.  It has been certified by the Uptime Institute as meeting all Tier III requirements such as concurrently maintainable electrical and mechanical components and multiple independent distribution paths serving dual-powered IT equipment that will be fully compatible within the typology of the site’s architecture.

“SaskTel has been providing data centre services to external customers for over 15 years and they have become core to SaskTel’s business as more and more companies seek high security and high availability locations to operate their mission critical information technology functions,” said SaskTel president and CEO Ron Styles, in the news release.  “Due to market demand, SaskTel projects that it will run out of Data Centre space in Regina in three years and in the next year we would need to start the building process of a new Tier III Data Centre.   Acquiring a fully functional Tier III Data Centre in Regina significantly reduces SaskTel’s exposure in the market and eliminates the time and effort required for new construction.”

SaskTel said that it anticipates that the transaction will close by the end of this month.
