REGINA – Hats off to the SaskTel Pioneer volunteers who, over the last 20 years, have refurbished close to 45,000 computers for Saskatchewan schools through the Computer for Schools (CFS) program.
CFS is a national, federal government-led initiative that operates in cooperation with all provinces and territories, the private and volunteer sectors.
In Saskatchewan, the SaskTel Pioneers and the Saskatchewan Technology Renewal Inc. collect and repair donated surplus computers at two centers in Regina and Saskatoon and the technical Work Experience Program workshop in La Ronge. Donations come from both the public and private sector, are stored at space donated by SaskTel, and once refurbished, are donated at no cost to Saskatchewan schools, school divisions and public libraries and non-profit learning organizations.
“SaskTel is proud of our Pioneers’ 20 years of partnership with Computers for Schools,” said SaskTel president and CEO Ron Styles, in the news release. “Their work not only complements our goal of managing our corporate impact on the environment, but also puts technology in the hands of our young people. This program could very well be putting computers and laptops into the hands of our future engineers, computer programmers or other technical employees.”
