REGINA — SaskTel announced today it has selected Samsung Electronics as the single vendor who will supply SaskTel with its 4G/5G radio access network (RAN) and core network.
Under the companies’ agreement, Samsung will supply all hardware, software and associated expertise to ensure the successful deployment of an end-to-end 5G solution, says the press release.
“We are pleased to select Samsung as the sole vendor for our 5G network deployment and we are confident that Samsung’s state-of-the-art 5G technology will deliver robust network capability and exceptional connectivity inherent in their 5G solutions,” said Doug Burnett, president and CEO of SaskTel, in the release. “The increased speeds, reliability, and capacity that 5G brings will support remote work, virtual health, and distance education.”
SaskTel had been on a similar technology track as Telus, in that it used Huawei as a major supplier for its 4G network and had hoped to continue with its gear, but it abandoned the Chinese manufacturer (as has Telus and Bell) since the federal government has never given a final decision on whether it would side with the U.S. and other jurisdictions in preventing Huawei to be deployed in the country’s 5G networks, due to security concerns.
