REGINA – SaskTel is commercially launching its new fibre optic network infiNET in the residential areas of Swift Current, and has already begun to connect its high speed Internet and maxTV customers in completed areas of the city.
infiNET is being deployed through SaskTel’s Fibre to the Premises (FTTP) Program, a $670 million initiative that will upgrade the broadband network and deploy fibre directly to homes in the established residential (brownfield) area of the nine largest urban centers in the province, Saskatoon, Regina, Moose Jaw, Weyburn, Estevan, Swift Current, Yorkton, North Battleford and Prince Albert. infiNET is also being extended to newly developed (greenfield) residential areas in communities across Saskatchewan where no traditional copper infrastructure exists.
Once connected, infiNET will allow customers to experience Internet speeds of up to 260 Mbps for downloading and 60 Mbps for uploading, plus enable the company's Max television customers to add up to seven high definition set top boxes in one home.
“We are excited to invest in emerging technology that will enhance our customers’ communication experiences today, while also setting the groundwork for technology enhancements in the future,” said president and CEO Ron Styles, in the news release. “infiNET will future proof SaskTel’s network by providing the capacity to significantly increase speeds and do upgrades over time without the need to replace the fibre.”
