REGINA – SaskTel has upgraded the high speed Internet service in 24 Indigenous and First Nations communities across the province.

The Crown Corp said Wednesday that customers in these communities have been automatically upgraded to internet service that is more than three times faster than their previous service, with download speeds of up to 5 Mbps.

SaskTel said in June that it would upgrade the internet services in 46 Indigenous and First Nations communities in 2017/18.  The remaining communities are expected to be upgraded by the end of March 2018.

“SaskTel understands that our customers require access to fast and reliable communications services to succeed in today’s digital world,” said acting president and CEO Doug Burnett, in the news release.  “We take great pride in knowing that these upgrades will help the residents of these communities gain better access to business, education, and social opportunities that may otherwise be out of reach for them.”

These upgrades are part of SaskTel’s commitment to invest $1.4 billion in capital in Saskatchewan through 2016-2021.
