WATERLOO, ON – Sandvine announced Tuesday the launch of its new analytics tool that aims to help communication service providers better leverage the data they collect about how devices are being used across their networks.

The company’s Device Insights Dashboard product is included with all of Sandvine’s Network Analytics product deployments. Communication service providers (CSPs) can gain further insight into their user device data to increase subscriber segmentation and drive service innovation.

The Device Insights Dashboard provides mobile CSPs with instant device categorization using IMEI-based information as registered with the GSM Association. It allows operators to compare and contrast trends between individual devices or compare performance metrics between specific device categories, such as high-end high-end smartphones or tablets.

As an example, Sandvine described in a press release how one of its clients, a U.S. regional carrier with an LTE network, was able to determine using the Device Insights Dashboard that:

  • iPhone 5S users consume 63% more data from the iTunes Store than Samsung Galaxy S4 users do from Google Play

  • Subscribers with flagship phones from Apple, HTC, and Samsung have an average monthly usage within 10% of each other

  • Tablets account for less than 1% of daily network traffic

The company says its network analytics product enables CSPs to dig deeper and explore top traffic categories or individual application usage by device category, manufacturer, operating system, or radio type.

The data is presented using interactive trend and bar charts that can be exported as a .PNG or .CSV file, while an open API means the data can be integrated with other software systems.

CSPs can explore top traffic categories or individual application usage by device category, manufacturer, operating system, or radio type. Sandvine says its network analytics products helps CSPs to better understand how usage patterns can vary widely between devices, then leverage that information to increase the accuracy of subscriber segmentation and identify potential third-party partnership or promotional opportunities.

“The information that the Device Insights Dashboard makes available is something service providers around the globe are clamouring for,” said Tom Donnelly, COO, sales and global services for Sandvine, in the release. “Not only will operators be able to use the data to improve overall experience by better understanding how subscribers are currently using their devices, but they will also be able to leverage that information to generate new sources of revenue.”
