RTNDA honours Gzowski

TORONTO – The Radio Television News Directors Association Canada said today that the award for Best Radio News Information Program will be named after the late broadcaster Peter Gzowski.

“There are some people whose voices you remember. Peter Gzowski had one of them,” says the RTNDA release. “At 28, he became the youngest-ever managing editor of Maclean’s magazine. But Peter Gzowski will be best remembered as the voice of Morningside. During his 15 years as host of the CBC Radio program, it is estimated he conducted some 27,000 interviews. The list of his awards and honourary degrees is long. Among them, Gzowski was named Companion of the Order of Canada.

“In 1999, he was appointed Chancellor of Trent University, a position he held until his death in 2002. Gzowski also worked tirelessly to promote literacy in Canada, and after his death the federal government created and funded the Peter Gzowski Foundation for Literacy in honour of his work,” adds the release.

The Peter Gzowski Award – Best Radio News Information Program will be awarded to the station, which displays overall excellence in content and presentation in a regularly scheduled news information program, which is not a daily newscast.

"Gzowski exemplifies the very best in Canadian Journalism," says RTNDA Canada President Bob McLaughlin. "We are honoured to pay tribute to his life’s work with this award."

The first Peter Gzowski Award will be handed out at the RTNDA National Awards Ceremony in Ottawa next June.
